ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is looking at whether using an ultrasound to measure the size of the stomach after major abdominal surgery can help predict if a patient will experience nausea or vomiting. These symptoms are common after surgeries involving the abdomen, pancreas, or liver and can make recovery harder, sometimes leading to serious lung problems. The goal is to find a simple way to identify patients who might benefit from early treatment to prevent these complications, such as placing a tube to help drain the stomach.
The study is open to adults aged 65 to 74 who are having planned major abdominal surgery (not emergency surgery) and are covered by social security. Patients who need immediate intensive care after surgery or have certain types of stomach or esophagus surgery won’t be eligible. Participants won’t have to undergo any extra invasive procedures beyond the usual care, but they will have ultrasound measurements taken to check their stomach size before and after surgery. This information may help doctors better manage nausea and vomiting after surgery, improving recovery and comfort.
