ClinConnect Summary
This study is looking at the tiny communities of bacteria, called microbiota, that live on the heart’s aortic valve in patients who need heart valve surgery. Researchers want to understand if these bacteria might play a role in valve diseases and whether they could affect healing or cause problems after surgery, especially when a new valve is put in. The study also highlights the important connection between oral health and heart health, since bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and might impact the heart valves. To support this, the hospital has set up special dental care for heart patients to help prevent infections.
People who may take part in this study are adults aged 65 or older who need surgery to replace their aortic valve. Participants must be able to understand the study information and agree to take part. The study will not include people with HIV, those under 18, or anyone with a history of certain heart infections. If you join, doctors will collect information about the bacteria on your valve during your planned surgery. This study does not involve any extra treatments but aims to learn more to improve care for future patients with valve disease.
