ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying a common infection called Trichomonas vaginalis, which is a parasite that can cause discomfort and other health issues. Researchers want to understand how tiny organisms living inside this parasite, called endosymbionts—specifically a type of bacteria (Mycoplasma hominis) and a virus—affect how harmful the parasite is. To do this, they will compare samples of the parasite that have these tiny organisms with samples where these organisms have been removed or blocked. They will use samples collected from women visiting a special clinic in Vienna, as well as from female sex workers in Austria who are regularly tested for infections. This study also looks at how common these infections are and whether women might have more than one infection at the same time.

Women who have tested positive for Trichomonas vaginalis at the clinic, or female sex workers who undergo routine health check-ups in Austria, may be eligible to participate. If involved, their previously collected vaginal swabs or urine samples will be tested to learn more about the infection and its related organisms. No new procedures or treatments are planned as part of this study; it mainly uses existing samples to gain better insights. This research could help improve understanding of how this infection works and possibly lead to better ways to manage or treat it in the future.
