ClinConnect Summary
This study is testing a new online group program called The T1D Talks for teens with Type 1 diabetes. The program aims to teach emotion-regulation skills—basically ways to manage strong feelings that come with living with diabetes—and to practice them in real-life situations (like telling friends or a coach about a blood glucose issue). It will run as 11 virtual sessions in three small groups, with about 6–8 participants in each group, and a total planned enrollment of around 18 youths aged 12 to 14 who have had Type 1 diabetes for at least one year.
Who can join: youths aged 12–14 with Type 1 diabetes for at least a year, who can read/write in English and have a reliable internet-enabled device for online sessions. They should not have another chronic condition that requires intensive daily management, or a significant mental health or cognitive disability that would prevent participation. This is a feasibility and acceptability study, meaning researchers want to see if the online program can be run smoothly and be acceptable to teens and their families; it is not designed to prove health outcomes yet. The study is led by Dr. Rachel Wasserman at Western Michigan University with the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, and results, including anonymized data, will be shared publicly after completion.
