ClinConnect Summary
This study is looking at patients who had surgery for serious injuries to their abdomen to better understand when and why doctors perform multiple planned surgeries, called staged operations, even if the usual medical reasons for doing this aren’t clearly met. The researchers want to find out how often these extra surgeries happen without clear need, what the patients’ health looks like in these cases, and what might cause delays in doing a second surgery if only one was planned at first. To do this, they will review past medical records of patients treated at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital between 2013 and 2024.
Patients included in this study are those who had abdominal injuries and underwent an initial surgery to explore and treat these injuries. People who had very severe injuries in other parts of their body, experienced a heart stoppage before or shortly after arriving at the hospital, or who died within a day after surgery will not be part of the study. Since this is a review of past cases, participants won’t be contacted or asked to do anything new. The goal is to learn more about current surgical practices and patient outcomes to help improve care for people with abdominal injuries in the future.
