ClinConnect Summary
This study is looking at whether a PDCA-cycle based training program can help emergency medicine residents perform tracheal intubations more safely and efficiently. It’s being conducted at The Affiliated Panyu Central Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University in Guangzhou, China. The researchers compare two training approaches: conventional training used in 2023 (the control group) and a PDCA-based program used in 2024 (the intervention group). About 100 residents who are rotating through the emergency department and who are required to perform intubations will be enrolled, with the study following them for about 6 months. Participation is by invitation, and residents who consent can join; those with extensive prior airway experience or who cannot complete the PDCA training are not eligible.
If you participate, you would receive a PDCA-based training package that includes lectures, high-fidelity simulation, supervised real-life practice, and ongoing feedback. The study will measure how often residents succeed on the first attempt at intubation, how long the procedure takes, and whether there are any airway injuries or extubation problems within 72 hours after planned removal of the tube. It also asks residents to complete a quick questionnaire about how they felt about the training. As of now, results have not been reported yet.
