ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying how taking gender-affirming hormone therapy might change the way people feel pain. Researchers know that men and women often experience pain differently, and they think that sex hormones—like those given during hormone therapy—might play a role in this difference. The study will follow people who are starting hormone therapy to see if their sensitivity to pain changes over six months as their hormone levels adjust.
Anyone starting gender-affirming hormone therapy at the transgender outpatient clinic may be invited to join, regardless of age or gender. If you choose to participate, you’ll be asked to fill out a simple mental health questionnaire, give small blood samples to check hormone levels, and take part in painless tests that measure how you sense different types of touch and temperature. These tests will happen four times over six months, and your usual medical care won’t be affected. The goal is to better understand how hormone therapy might influence pain perception, which could help improve care for transgender people in the future.
