ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying how well the brain receives blood and oxygen during a type of surgery called carotid endarterectomy (CEA), which is done to prevent strokes in people with narrowed carotid arteries. During the surgery, the surgeon temporarily clamps the artery to remove the blockage, which can lower blood flow to the brain. The study looks at two ways to monitor the brain’s oxygen levels: measuring the pressure inside the artery (called stump pressure) and using a special non-invasive device that tracks oxygen levels in both sides of the brain. Researchers want to see if low artery pressure is linked to bigger differences in oxygen levels between the two sides of the brain, which could help doctors better protect the brain during surgery.
People aged 65 and older who are having awake carotid endarterectomy surgery at the study hospital may be eligible to participate. During the study, patients will have their brain oxygen levels measured before and after the artery is clamped, and the artery pressure will also be recorded. The goal is to find out if certain pressure levels predict important changes in brain oxygen that might increase risk during surgery. The results could help improve how doctors monitor brain health during this procedure, especially when patients are awake and can communicate any changes they feel.
