ClinConnect Summary
The NOVELLA trial is an observational study that tests whether computer software can predict how blood flow in abdominal arteries will change after major pancreatic surgery, using only a patient’s preoperative CT scan. Researchers will compare the software’s predictions with the actual blood flow measurements taken during the operation to see how accurate the tool is. This aims to provide a non-invasive way to plan surgery, since the current way to assess preoperative blood flow often involves an invasive imaging test. The study is being done at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona in Spain, and results are not yet available.
About 100 adults who are scheduled for pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure) can potentially join. Key eligibility includes having a good-quality preoperative arterial-phase CT scan and Michel’s type I artery pattern on imaging, and that the patient agrees to participate. Participants may have either open or robotic surgery. Exclusions include being under 18, inability to measure blood flow, or certain artery involvement such as gastroduodenal artery infiltration. Participants will undergo the planned surgery, and researchers will compare the intraoperative blood flow measurements with the software’s predictions. The study is currently enrolling by invitation, with completion expected around 2026.
