ClinConnect Summary
This trial is testing a thirst management protocol (the SEDE protocol) for adults in the Intensive Care Unit who are about to have their breathing tube removed or who have a tracheotomy. It’s a randomized study that compares the protocol-based thirst care to usual care (water offered as needed). The researchers will look at how thirsty participants feel at 0, 15, and 60 minutes after these procedures, using a simple thirst scale. The study also aims to translate and validate the Chinese version of this thirst safety protocol to fit cultural use.
To take part, people should be adults (18 to 100 years old), speak Chinese, be conscious, and have orders for extubation or a tracheotomy. Exclusions include patients with water restrictions or those who had thirst-related measurements in recovery rooms. The trial plans to enroll about 120 participants and uses a single-blind design, meaning participants don’t know which group they’re in. Enrollment is expected to begin around January 2026, with completion around December 2027. It’s led by National Taiwan University, overseen by a data monitoring committee, and is not tied to an FDA-regulated drug or device. Data from individuals is not planned to be shared publicly.
