Background:
Insufficient circulating levels of vitamin D is a common problem in both developed and developing countries; it is estimated that over one billion people have vitamin D deficiency at this time. In children, vitamin D deficiency leads to nutritional rickets, which is considered the most common non-communicable disease of children worldwide. Eligibility criteria
- Inclusion Criteria:
- • In one of the 6 high-risk groups between the age of 6 months and 3 years.
- Exclusion Criteria:
- • known familial rickets (hypophosphatemic or vitamin D resistant)
- • known parathyroid hormone problems
- • any child on diuretics
- • presence of a chronic disease or use of medications known to affect vitamin D metabolism
- • renal insufficiency
- • known malabsorption
- • rickets secondary to other syndromes (e.g. Fanconi syndrome)
