ClinConnect Summary
The CLAPOT trial is studying the long-term outcomes of a procedure called Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO), which is used to help patients with a condition known as atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of stroke because it can lead to the formation of blood clots. For patients who cannot take blood thinners due to serious bleeding risks, LAAO offers a safer alternative by closing off a part of the heart where these clots often form. This study looks at the effectiveness and safety of the LAAO procedure over time and compares two different devices used for this treatment.
To be eligible for this study, patients must have non-valvular atrial fibrillation and a clear reason not to use blood thinners. Specifically, the trial includes patients who received the LAAO procedure at the CHU of Brest between December 2014 and August 2023. Participants in the study can expect to have their health outcomes monitored over a long period, helping researchers understand how well this procedure works and whether one device is better than the other. This research is important as it could improve treatment options for patients with atrial fibrillation who face bleeding risks.
