ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying how to prevent tuberculosis (TB) in people who have poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. Researchers are focusing on patients aged 45 and older who have high blood sugar levels (an HbA1c of 9% or more) and are screening them for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) using a test called QuantiFERON. If a patient tests positive for LTBI, they will receive treatment to help prevent active TB. This treatment can either be a daily pill called isoniazid taken for 9 months or a combination of isoniazid and another medication called rifapentine taken weekly for 3 months.
To join the trial, participants must be 45 years or older and have poorly controlled diabetes. However, individuals with active tuberculosis, those who are immunocompromised (meaning their immune system is weakened), or women who are currently pregnant cannot participate. Throughout the trial, doctors will monitor how well patients complete their treatment and check for signs of inflammation in their bodies. This trial is important as it aims to find effective ways to protect people with diabetes from developing active tuberculosis.
