ClinConnect Summary
The COMMUNITY ASPIRE trial is studying a program called S.A.F.E. Firearm, which aims to help families safely store firearms in their homes, especially those with children. This trial will take place in up to 15 community health centers across Illinois. During well-child visits, pediatricians will have short conversations with parents about the importance of secure firearm storage and will offer them a free cable lock for their guns. Researchers want to find out how well this program works in changing how parents store firearms, as well as how effective the training and support for clinic staff are in implementing this new practice.
To participate, you must be a parent of a child aged 0-17 who is going for a well-child visit at one of the participating clinics in Illinois. If you are invited, you’ll be asked to complete a brief survey about your experience with the S.A.F.E. Firearm program after your visit. Health care personnel working at the clinics will also share their thoughts through interviews. This study is not yet recruiting participants, but it aims to make homes safer for children by encouraging responsible firearm storage.
