ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying how L-carnitine, a supplement that can help with certain health issues, affects children and infants with a condition called phenylketonuria (PKU). PKU is a genetic disorder where the body cannot properly break down an amino acid called phenylalanine, which can build up and cause problems if not managed. Since kids with PKU often have limited diets that restrict protein-rich foods, they may not get enough L-carnitine from their diet. The study aims to compare the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (a protein important for brain health) and phenylalanine in children with PKU before and after taking L-carnitine, as well as to assess any changes in their intelligence through testing.

To participate in the trial, candidates must be diagnosed with PKU and be between the ages of one month and 18 years. This means both boys and girls can be included, but children with other metabolic or neurological diseases are not eligible. Participants in the study will take the L-carnitine supplement and have their phenylalanine and brain health monitored over time to see if there are any positive effects. It's important to note that the trial is currently active but not recruiting new participants.
